Lisa Curl "Wish I Were Japanese"
by Preston Jones, Oklahoma Gazette March 30, 2005
Oklahoma City singer/songwriter Lisa Curl's debut album, "Wish I Were Japanese," unfolds with such ease and grace that you can't help but smile and give yourself over. Over the course of the nine tracks assembled here — two of which were recorded at Casey Friedman's Inner State Studio — Curl effortlessly conjures careworn images of past lives and loves through her dexterous acoustic guitar work and simmering, bluesy vocals.
With assists from fellow metro-area musicians Laura Wilhite, Steven Stark and Jason Littrell, cuts like "Perfect Boy," the title track and "After the Grey" glow with sprightly spontaneity while simultaneously disguising the persistent ache of a fractured heart.
An unassuming, hand-crafted and wholly enjoyable freshman recording, Curl's "Wish I Were Japanese" should serve as her calling card to the next level. Visit lisacurl.com for more information.
