Inner State Studio Sampler 2003-2005
by Preston Jones, Oklahoma Gazette April 6, 2005
From
the swamp stomp of the Reverb Bros.’ “In The Fog” to the blues-inflected
freak-out of Willie Vanilli’s “Trashcan Filthy” to the fragile
acoustics of Lisa Curl’s “Wish I Was Japanese,” the stellar
“Inner State Studio Sampler 2003-2005” showcases some of the best
music Oklahoma City has to offer.
A sort of electronic business card/status report from Casey Friedman, proprietor
of Inner State Studio and tireless champion of local music, the 21 tracks assembled
here run the gamut (there’s literally something here for anyone even slightly
interested in music) but share one characteristic: passionate quality.
Perhaps the most arresting aspect of this sampler is that no matter what your
tastes, there’s at least one cut offered here that’ll hook you, perhaps
driving you to seek out this music in its natural habitat: the abundant and welcoming
clubs and bars of the metro area.
Then again, maybe baby steps are better for those who still inexplicably doubt
the vitality of Oklahoma City’s musical nightlife this compilation is an
excellent way to dip your toe in the oh-so-inviting waters.
