the Black Ship "Age of Surrender" Vox Magazine 2004
In the two-part “Monarchy/The Flight” Oklahoma’s Ben Kennedy pieces together ghostly guitars on a lonely backdrop of echoed drums and sleepy vocals - sleepy vocals that work. Much is the same for the entirety of “Black Ship” Kennedy’s music tugs the spirit and rattles with honesty. It’s expansive and absolutely gorgeous. Kennedy’s vocals, admittedly, aren’t easily taken. They’re bare, but not hollow. Although Kennedy boasts no vocal training, this hasn’t hindered his ability to sing from is heart. I just wish everyone else was this real.
